The project involves the addition of quality audio with the use of shield for Arduino which can play up to 22KHz of 12-bit uncompressed audio files of any length.
The shield used in the project is available as an easy-to-make kit and costs very low even if it includes an onboard digital to analog converter (DAC), filter, and op-amp for high quality output. An SD/MMC card is used to store the audio files which are read off and they are available at nearly any store. The onboard thumbwheel potentiometer can be used to control the volume.
Since the shield is a kit, it comes with all parts required to build the circuit. It does not include the speaker, headphones, tools, SD card, and the Arduino. Anyone with great soldering experience should be able to build it because it is fairly easy to construct. An Arduino library also comes with the shield to make it easy to use. It only requires dragging of uncompressed wave files onto the SD card and plugging it in. When buttons are pressed or when a sensor goes off, the library is used to play audio synchronously as an interrupt.
