Building the Better Monome Known as Arduinome

Figure:1

Figure 1

The Arduinome refers to the merging the Arduino which functions as the brain and a clone of the original Monome.

The Arduino is a microprocessor-based hardware interface with development environment on the computer while the Monome 40h is an 8×8 button and LED grid that is used as an interface to musical programs or synthesizers. The Arduinome features Midi-out, handcrafted box and 8×8 arcade buttons from mounted 8×8 bright LEDs. The LEDs were connected in a matrix by sliding the buttons through the holes. A round file was used and filed all the holes. A 3mm plywood was used, instead of plastic, in the outside along with a piece of an old IKEA wardrobe.

During the construction, there was a failure when the LED matrix did not light up when several types of MAX7219 Arduino, different configurations, and different source codes. Two new LED drive ICs were also tested along with the breadboarding but still failed to make it work. Finally, the Shift out success was done by referring to the Arduino site which provided several examples. Through the inputs on the Arduino, the LED matrix were multiplexed and connected properly.
