The real time clock is a custom designed module based on DS1307 that comes fully assembled and pre-programmed with the current time as the clock operates in either 12-hour or 24-hour format with AM/PM indicator.
The module can operate for a minimum of 9 years up to 17 years due to the included Lithium coin cell battery without external 5V power. The I2C protocol is used to access the DS1307 with a test-bed written to program the modules. Some information on interfacing the module to any microcontroller is given by the test-bed code. On the serial bus, the DS1307 operates as a slave device. A Start condition is implemented to obtain access and a device identification code is provided followed by a register code.
The DS1307 serial real-time clock is a low-power, full binary coded decimal clock/calendar with features of counting the Seconds, Minutes, Hours, Month, Day, Year with leap year compensation, data storage using 56byte battery-backed nonvolatile RAM, 2-wire serial interface, programmable square wave output signal, automatic power-fail detect & switch circuitry, 8-pin DIP availability, optional industrial temperature range, and consumes less than 500nA in battery backup mode with oscillator running.
