The Air Drums project eliminates the need for using tactile drum pads by producing an electronic drum kit played in the air.
In this project the lack of drum pads is the important difference between this drum kit and store-bought drum kits since it can be played entirely in the air where the distracting tapping noise that comes from the drum pads is eliminated. It includes upright instruments where one/two modified drumsticks are required to play instead of an electronic bass pedal needed by the floor drum.
Three separate tasks divide the structure of this device which includes IR position parsing, drum sound synthesis, and Bluetooth communication. In IR position parsing, the serial data transmitted from the laptop software is received in this portion of the code written on the ATmega32. The number of the LED whose data is being transmitted is included in the information sent out in packets of information.
A Wiimote is contained in the Bluetooth communication and connected to a laptop with Blue Soleil Bluetooth software is a Bluetooth dongle. To determine the positions of multiple IR LEDs, the Wiimote is used for its CMOS camera technology.
