The project utilizes Motorola MC68HC908 MCU to create the USB-IR-BOY which is an LIRC compatible USB bus receiver hardware.
Since most new computers are no longer including RS232 port, the use of standard RS232 port IR hardware is almost obsolete. A new standard and low cost homemade IR receiver was created for all PC hardware with USB included. A GPL licensed complete system including electronic schematics, MCU source code and binary, an am LIRCD compatible kernel module are covered by the project.
The board can be made using a real PCB or a stripboard that contains grid of drilled holes and copper stripes on one side. The flash image of the MCU can be built by finding an already built image. The MCU board can be programmed by creating a small prommer which requires a PC with RS232 port or a USB-to-serial adapter. The MCU code is toggled ON/OFF during execution using optional LED.
The usbirboy module does not need any other driver to be available and the kernel module is only for 2.6.x kernels. The usbskeleton from the Linux kernel USB core is used for creating the kernel module.
