Laser Pointer Using Blu-Ray Technology

Figure:1

Figure 1

The project utilizes a Sony Blu-Ray replacement drive assembly for the PS3 to build a Blu-Ray laser pointer device.

The device was built in good size with quality on the case and with current-limited power supply as opposed to the simple resistor based design. It also features rechargeable Li-Ion batteries for better performance and size, with charging jack on the back of the pointer and a protection circuit module for Li-Ion batteries. Some items were also used such as a jack for charging the device, wires, breadboard PCB, and a variety of components for the power supply.

The information on the Blu-Ray diode may be found on the website pertaining to the dissection of a Blu-Ray reader assembly which was the source of the power supply circuit and the information regarding the amount of current that could be run through the diode.

The Blu-Ray laser pointer is clearly extremely bright and there is a need to be cautious in avoiding exposure to the eye. Since the color is very near UV and normally much more deep violet, it sometimes appears quite dim. It does appear very blue on a paper and bleached targets.
