Low Cost Auto Pilot Known as ArduPilot

Figure:1

Figure 1

The ArduPilot is based on the open-source Arduino platform which will be used as navigation-only autopilot.

The design of ArduPilot refers to a custom PCB with an embedded ATmega168 processor which switches between RC control and autopilot control by combining with circuitry. By controlling the throttle and rudder, the ArduPilot can be used to navigate the altitude. It can gave any of GPS waypoints and trigger camera or other sensors since it is fully programmable. For the solid and reliable 5V 1Hz EM406 GPS module, it comes with a 6-pin GPS connector and multiple waypoints. The ability to reboot the main processor in mid-flight is also included as well as a separate circuit to transfer control from the RC system to the autopilot and back again. This device can be used for car, boat, and autonomous aircraft.

During the assembly, a 5-pin breakaway connector for the FTDI port is the only through-hole component needed to be soldered aside from all the surface-mount components. Other through-hole components include 3 pigtails for VTRL, 2 ICSP connectors, and two 3-pin connectors for channel 1&2 output. Latest versions of ArduPilot are now available on homepage.
