Motor Controller with Adjustable Voltage

Figure:1

Figure 1

The project was designed for anywhere and anytime motor testing with the use of adjustable voltage on motor controllers to manipulate the speed of the motor during testing.

The transistors 3055 were used since it has a rating of 10 A. The input side of the controller should start with a fuse of 30 A to 40 A on a suitable heatsink which also holds the regulator on the exhaust side for cooling. During the process, Q5 is driven by the voltage divider VR1. Q1 to Q4 will then be powered by Q5. The voltage to the motor will be increased upon the increase of base voltage on Q1 to Q4 due to the power provided by Q5.

The transistors Q1 to Q4 are connected in parallel as well as their corresponding resistors with each other at the output side. This type of connection by the 0.1 Ohm resistors will cause the load to be balanced between the transistors. A red wire with 12’ of 14 American Wire Gauge is used for the 0.1 Ohm resistors. The regulator is constantly supplying 12 V to the fan when above 12 V is being used.
