The device utilizes a large 50W resistor to be used for discharging NiCad battery pack.
The discharging of NiCad is being controlled from a computer wherein during the discharging, the computer samples the voltage of the pack on load and marks a series of red points on the screen. The computer will automatically stop the discharge of the pack when the voltage drops below 1V per cell. This will cause the NiCad pack to be flattened safely without going too far.
The recording of all the points as it plots the discharge graph on screen and saves the voltages as a file is one of the important advantages of COMBATT discharger. This will compare the performance of similar NiCad packs as it gets its name from COMpare BATTeries. Doing this comparison can identify which packs are faulty.
The use of COMBATT unit enables the cells to be cycled and compare the results from a number of charge and discharge cycles. After being cycled once or twice, the performance of cell often increases. The rates of charge and discharge are expressed as multiples of their nominal capacity as the hourly rate of discharge.
