This article shows results of experiment special diodes that can measure the light intensity and suitable to the regular LED’s. This one has a quite interesting outcome that you could find yourselves doing it.
This circuit uses the mechanism known as photoelectric effect; this is when a photon of sufficient energy strikes the diode excites an electron by creating a free electron and a positively charged electron hole. With all the active components like transistors and IC’s is semiconductor it is all now a photodiode. This one uses a Darlington pair just to gain the level to be able to measure it accurately and easily. You will need some capacitor just to reduce the noises.
In this circuit, they use diode as the element that can change the resistance of intensity of the light it receives. By changing the Darlington into an operation amplifier with the replacement of single diode with bridge, this one will work with LEDs, photodiodes and photo resistors. By having some light sources to emit light with the same intensity it will be easier to check the circuit. Diodes here will be exposing to light while the second one will be protected by paint.
