Security System Known as Checkpoint Charlie

Figure:1

Figure 1

The Checkpoint Charlie project aims to build a security system that includes an effective access control terminal.

The name Checkpoint Charlie was derived from “Checkpoint C”, which was the name given by the Western Allies to a crossing point between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War. Its main purpose was to check all the members of the Allied forces and all the foreigners while providing secured access to restricted areas, to ensure that only qualified people can gain entry.

A Keil MCB2130 demonstration board is the basis of the project wherein all the necessary external resources are included so that I could function as an access control terminal. A Java Card smart card is being used for powerful user authentication for this Checkpoint Charlie security system instead of the old magnetic stripe card technology which are used in older versions of access terminals. It also performs a challenge-response scheme for optimum reliability using a symmetric cryptographic algorithm or Triple DES which utilizes keys up to 192 bits long. Upon a request through the RS232 interface, the access control terminal can track all the activities and can be transmitted remotely.
