The details of the project are concentrated on building a SIM reader that will be used for investigation and experimentation of Smart or SIM cards.
The device is useful when backing-up/restoring stored SIM card data, recovering deleted SMS’s and phone contacts, examine the last phone numbers dialed, and other purposes. An open source software can be used to read from and write to the card once the reader design is built.
The assembly of the circuit will only require a few tools which are handy whenever assembling/fixing/modifying electronic devices. The first component that will be soldered onto the PCB is R8 that sets the brightness of the indicator LED. Nest is the 1N4001 protection diode D1 used for the SIM card and voltage regulator to protect from accidentally connecting the 9V battery backwards. The 5V regulator 7805 IC2 is next to convert the 9V battery power to a stable 5V. The regulator is essential to avoid damaging SIM cards when connecting 9V power to the contacts. Next is the indicator LED connected directly to the 5V line.
The circuit uses a crystal for generating clock for the SIM card microprocessor that is stabilized by capacitors.
