The word SOPHOCLES refers to the Solar Powered Hidden Observing Vehicles which is a sophisticated yet small robot system.
The SOPHOCLES has been designed mainly for watching or observing purposes by having a detector that can be used to look for sticky air or poisonous gases. The robot can be taken to hidden places using the motors while pictures of dangerous areas can be captured and shown using the built-in camera. The information regarding the detected materials can be displayed in a radio. The robot can be controlled as well as the power usage of solar cells during the missions where low-power intermittent operation is required over the stream of several weeks.
The autonomous mode is one of the two main operation modes of the robot. This is where the implemented artificial intelligence of each robot provides the power to the mode. The quality of air is checked by the robot as it works independently while providing a signal in the occurrence of any difference. The command mode is the other mode wherein an operator controls the robot. The directional commands are sent by the operator such as left, right, and the like.
