Across the phone line of a distant phone, the Infinity Bug is connected in parallel mode as the construction uses diodes, transistors, capacitors, and surface mount resistors with a high degree of soldering.
During the operation, the Bug is used as the phone rings. It will replace the receiver after having a conversation with the person on the other end. The Infinity Bug picks up the line after whistling into the receiver. The audio at the place where it is located will be picked up by the high-gain amplifier in the Infinity Bug. It can be placed anywhere as long as it is connected across the phone line and does not have to be next to the distant phone.
The Infinity Bug acts as a leech by obtaining its operating current from the phone line. A phone line voltage varies from 42V to 55V and will drop to about 36V when the Infinity Bug is connected to the line. The line voltage drops to around 12V and the whistle-detecting circuit does not see any voltage because of the use of 8v2 Zener diode which drops nearly all available voltage due to self-cancelling feature.
