The wheelchair detection system has been designed to distinguish the size of a wheelchair or handcart by using an in-ground capacitive sensor to let a door open automatically.
The device was meant to replace or complement the existing methods of access for the physically disabled since it can be used to detect the presence of a person or object near a door, which can turn ON a security camera or warn security personnel. A button-operated system or the current system can be complimented or replaced by the sensor from the sensor board output.
Both entry and exit from the building can be handled by using a second sensor in a production environment. One sensor would be enough if placed on a ramp. A second sensor could be used to detect direction if the unit is being used in a flat surface. Along with the e-field demo board, the prototype consists of plastic enclosure, coax cable, male and female coax connectors, two conductor shielded cable, 32 × 28 inch polycarbonate sheet, and 25 feet of 2 inch aluminum foil tape. The granularity of the reading is adjustable depending on the environment type.
