Assistant Public Works Officer

Graduated with a BSEE, joined the Navy and am now working as an assistant public works officer in Japan, receiving and sorting facilities requirements while managing customers' expectations. As a hobby, I enjoy embedded systems with no true specialty. I have ideas and try and learn what I need to get those ideas going.

Discussions Comment: Current Reduction

May 13, 2012

I think that having a circuit’s performance being dependent on the maximum power output of the power supply is concerning. If bigger batteries mean more amperage at the same voltage, when what you’re looking for is simply longer performance period, there’s a fundamental problem with the design….

No worries, I understand the mental design process. I guess a lot depends on your input for the 3D coordinate system. If you’re looking at a video input, then you will definitely need more power. But I think that either way the Pi is a good idea. It gives a good foundation so that you don’t need…

Don’t forget to include the efficiency of your inverter in the calculations. Plus it should be re-emphasized that this will result in only an estimate.

Note: 30 Hz would be every .033 seconds, an order of magnitude faster. Also, though the requirements are also little vague, have you considered a touch screen input?

Hey Tim,

I don’t have too many ideas on how you can or would like to approach this, but it sounds like your biggest concern is cheap yet powerful computing. Have you looked into the raspberry pi? It seems like that would be cheap but powerful and fit your needs well.

In terms of wiring and…

I don’t know, it is an insanely time consuming project, lots of late nights working, uncertain returns, I don’t think I’m up for another project of this magnitude. Maybe I’ll work on that shoe shiner idea I had instead…

For both the XBee and the Nordic systems you need a separate microcontroller. The XBee, in its simplest form, is a pipe for UART communication. It is literally as easy as hooking up the input and output on the XBee on both ends to the IC’s and then acting like the ICs are directly connected with…

Hmmmm… for some reason, it ate my first response. Let me try again.

While I’ve never used a Zigbee, according to Sparkfun’s Wireless buying guide (http://www.sparkfun.com/tutorials/128), Zigbees are not recommended for their steep learning curve and unimpressive performance. Others may…
